How does an Induction Motor Work ? They are cheaper, more rugged and easier to maintain compared to other alternatives. In this video we will learn the working of a 3 phase squirrel- cage induction motor. The following article gives a detailed description of the video lecture. Parts of an Induction Motor. An induction motor has 2 main parts; the Stator and Rotor. The Stator is the stationary part and the rotor is the rotating part. The Rotor sits inside the Stator. There will be a small gap between rotor and stator, known as air- gap. The value of the radial air- gap may vary from 0. The way the steel laminations are arranged inside the frame is shown in the following figure. Here only few of the steel laminations are shown. Winding passes through slots of the stator. It produces a rotating magnetic field (RMF). As shown in the figure below a magnetic field is produced which is rotating in nature. RMF is an important concept in electrical machines. We will see how this is produced in the next section. A wire carrying current produces a magnetic field around it. Now for this special arrangement, the magnetic field produced by 3 phase A. C current will be as shown at a particular instant. Two more instances are shown in the following figure, where due to the variation in the A. C current, the magnetic field also varies. It is clear that the magnetic field just takes a different orientation, but its magnitude remains the same. From these 3 positions it’s clear that it is like a magnetic field of uniform strength rotating. Revised 26 January 2013. The thermal model of the induction motor presented here also has the. Simulation and validation of the thermal model. Semiconductor Components Industries, LLC, 2013. 3-phase Brushless Motor Driver. Thermal shutdown operating. The speed of rotation of the magnetic field is known as synchronous speed. The E. M. F will produce a current through the loop. So the situation has become as if a current carrying loop is situated in a magnetic field. This will produce a magnetic force in the loop according to Lorentz law, So the loop will start to rotate. Here instead of a simple loop, something very similar to a squirrel cage is used. A squirrel cage has got bars which are shorted by end rings. So as in the previous case, current will be induced in the bars of the squirrel cage and it will start to rotate. You can note variation of the induced current in squirrel cage bars. This is due to the rate of change of magnetic flux in one squirrel bar pair which is different from another, due to its different orientation. This variation of current in the bar will change over time. You can note one big advantage of 3 phase induction motors, as it is inherently self starting. You can also note that the bars of a squirrel cage are inclined to the axis of rotation, or it has got a skew. This is to prevent torque fluctuation. If the bars were straight there would have been a small time gap for the torque in the rotor bar pair to get transferred to the next pair. This will cause torque fluctuation and vibration in the rotor. By providing a skew in the rotor bars, before the torque in one bar pair dies out, the next pair comes into action. Thus it avoids torque fluctuation. The Speed of Rotation of a Rotor & the Concept of Slip. You can notice here that the both the magnetic field and rotor are rotating. But at what speed will the rotor rotate? To obtain an answer for this let's consider different cases. Consider a case where the rotor speed is same as the magnetic field speed. The rotor experiences a magnetic field in a relative reference frame. Since both the magnetic field and the rotor are rotating at same speed, relative to the rotor, the magnetic field is stationary. This means zero force on the rotor bars, so the rotor will gradually slow down. But as it slows down, the rotor loops will experience a varying magnetic field, so induced current and force will rise again and the rotor will speed up. In short, the rotor will never be able to catch up with the speed of the magnetic field. It rotates at a specific speed which is slightly less than synchronous speed. The difference in synchronous and rotor speed is known as slip. Energy Transfer in the Motor. The rotational mechanical power obtained from the rotor is transferred through a power shaft. Various components of these losses are friction loss, copper loss, eddy current and hysteresis loss. Such energy loss during the motor operation is dissipated as heat, so a fan at the other end helps in cooling down the motor.

Glynn Family Honors Program ? Are honors program students in any way segregated socially? How much of an advantage is it on a job/graduate school app? Pretty much, i would appreciate it if anyone knowledgeable about the program could answer my questions and/or provide general insight I couldnt find on the website. Junior Economics Major Finds Home in Honors Program // News // Department of Economics // University of Notre Dame. Luke Pardue says he was looking for a “sense of family” when considering which college to attend. He found it at Notre Dame through the John and Barbara Glynn Family Honors program. It also provides summer funding to conduct original research. Our common first- year classes allowed us all to get to know each other, creating a community of passionate students. And even as these common classes stopped, the community of the honors program remained,” he says. As they begin to pursue their majors, their courses still tend to be small, discussion- based classes. The Glynn program then culminates with a senior thesis: a yearlong research or creative project in which students have the opportunity to work one- on- one with a faculty mentor. He is also currently spending a semester abroad at Oxford University. I realized how complicated issues which look simple enough in a textbook can be in real life and that there are no simple solutions to the problems of global poverty and international development.”. His experiences in Bangladesh will also play a large part in his honors thesis, Pardue says, adding that the honors program overall has taught him to look in new and unexpected ways at all sorts of complex problems. Key Definitions. Evaluation: Evaluation is the systematic collection and analysis of information about the characteristics and outcomes of programs and projects as a basis for judgments, to improve effectiveness, and/or inform decisions about current and future programming. Evaluation is distinct from assessment, which may be designed to examine country or sector context to inform project design, or an informal review of projects. Performance Evaluation: Performance evaluations focus on the implementation of an intervention (or management effort) and describe what a particular project or program has achieved (either at an intermediate point in execution or at the conclusion of an implementation period); how it is being implemented; how it is perceived and valued; whether expected results are occurring; and other questions that are pertinent to program design, management and operational decision making. Performance evaluations often incorporate before- after comparisons, but generally lack a rigorously defined counterfactual. Impact Evaluation: Impact evaluations assess/measure the change in the targeted groups, organizations and other beneficiaries that can be attributed to a project, program or policy. Impact evaluations are based on models of cause and effect and require a credible and rigorously defined counterfactual to control for factors other than the intervention that might account for the observed change. The essence of impact evaluation lies in establishing that the changes have occurred as a result of the intervention, or at least the latter has substantially contributed to it. Impact evaluations require defining a counterfactual by establishing a treatment and a control group. Summative/ Ex- Post Evaluations: They differ from performance evaluations in that their focus is primarily on outcomes and impacts but they often include evaluation of effectiveness and are conducted when an intervention has ended or is soon likely to end. Global/Regional Evaluations: Are designed to examine the performance and outcomes of a major sector or sub- sector of foreign affairs programs to draw general findings, conclusions and lessons. The purpose of a global evaluation is not to evaluate the success or failure of individual projects but to determine the efficacy and outcomes of the programs per se. Experience Reviews: These involve systematic analysis of past experience. They focus on a limited range of questions that are of paramount interest to policy and decision makers. Experience reviews do not require fieldwork, and the needed information is gathered from sources such as literature reviews, experts’ workshops, key informant interviews and/or surveys. Monitoring: Monitoring provides an indication of progress against goals and indicators of performance, reveals whether desired results are occurring, and confirms whether implementation is on track. In general the results measured are the direct and near term consequences of program activities; whereas evaluations document the achievement of outcomes and results and, in some cases, the value of continuing the investment. Performance Indicator: Performance indicators measure a particular characteristic or dimension of an intervention’s outputs or outcomes. Outputs are directly attributable to the intervention activities, while outcomes represent results to which a given program contributes but for which it is not solely responsible. Program: A program is a set of activities or projects that are typically implemented by several parties over a specified period of time. A program evaluation often involves an assessment or study of multiple activities that may cut across sectors and/or geographic areas. Project: A project is a set of planned and then executed interventions identified through a design process, which are together intended to achieve a defined result, generally by solving an associated problem or challenge. The term project does not refer only or primarily to an implementing mechanism, such as a contract or grant. A set of projects makes up the portfolio of a program. A project evaluation is often carried out within the framework of a broader program. Activity: An activity is a component of a project that contributes to a project purpose. It refers to an award (such as a contract, grant or cooperative agreement), or a component of a project such as training or technical assistance. B. Purpose. This new evaluation policy proposes a framework, where applicable, to implement evaluations of programs, projects, and activities that are carried out and funded by the Department. This policy is intended to provide clarity about the purposes of evaluation, the requirements for evaluation, the types of evaluations that are possible, and an approach for conducting, disseminating and using evaluations. Evaluation at the Department has two primary purposes: (1) accountability to stakeholders and (2) learning, which could inform and improve program, project, and activity design and implementation. Accountability: Well designed and timely evaluations help to ensure accountability for the USG resources spent on foreign affairs activities. Evaluations enable program managers and leadership to determine the cost effectiveness of programs, projects, initiatives, activities, interventions, etc., and in the case of a program or project, quality of its planning and implementation. Consequently, evaluation findings can provide empirical data for reports to various stakeholders in foreign assistance planning and in larger diplomatic activities. Learning: Evaluations document the results, impact, or effectiveness of organizational and programming activities, thereby facilitating learning from experience. The Department can apply such learning to the development of new projects, programs, strategies and policies. Empirically- grounded evaluations also aid informed decision making when considering new programs or projects, interventions, activities, etc. C. Applicability. Effective February 1. State Bureaus and S/GAC. Other offices designated by the Performance Improvement Officer (PIO) may also be requested to adhere to this policy on a case by case basis. D. Evaluation Requirement. The Department of State requires that all large programs, projects, and activities be evaluated at least once in their lifetime or every five years, whichever is less. Bureaus will determine which programs, projects or activities to evaluate; upon request RM and F will assist in this effort. For most bureaus, a “large” program, project, or activity is one whose dollar value equals or exceeds the median program/ project/ activity size for the bureau. For bureaus that conduct their programs, projects, and activities primarily with staff resources, a “large” program, project, or activity can instead be identified using criteria based on the number of full time staff (or equivalent). In this case, a “large” program, project, or activity is one for which the number of full time staff associated with the program, project, or activity exceeds the median number of staff associated with individual programs, projects, and activities in the bureau. |
